With otu seeing your window, I am unable to help. :-( How big of a unit is it?

There should some tips in the owner/install manual that comes with the unit.

its a small A/C window unit; bought at home depot; the windows are about 30 inches wide and wood (old historic windows, but relatively strong). The A/C window unit does not take up the whole 30 inch width.

There should be some side slides that will slide out to the end of the windows..

Being the unit is small, and window is strong. just close the window to the top of the unit. Then if you have kids or fear that someone may try to open the window, wedge something between the upper part of the window to the frame.

The pull the slides to close out the outdoors.. if they don't reach, cut a piece of plywood to fill in the gap.
