I have a big honkin' window unit I inherited with my house.
It worked great last summer. Stayed in the window all winter - (When I had the room painted, I was going to pull it and store it in basement. My painter/handyman said, no way, too heavy, it will get damaged, etc.)
I believe the fan is shot.
When I turn the AC on, it clicks and hums, and a LITTLE cold air comes out. But it sounds like it is straining - actually, more like it is trying to overcome something... Like one good push and all will be well...
If I flip the switch over to "FAN", nothing.
So I am guessing compressor is fine, fan is not.
Is this the kind of thing I can open up and poke around in?
Or should I call in a repairman?
Or will that be ultimately more expensive than getting a new unit?

i would call another buddy over and remove the tank from the window and take it apart.. Sounds like the motor is shot, and may need oil if there oil port on the motor.. if it's sealed (no oil port) then you're best to get a new unit..

Thanks. Forgot to bring the model # with me, so I can't Google a manual to see if there's even going to be an oil port.
You said, sounds like the motor is shot AND may need oil.
If the motor is shot, isn't the whole thing toast?

Some times the bearing may gone dry, and the motor won't spin.. I'd see if you have an oil port.. If so, try and put some oil in it and spin it by hand a few times.. then plug it in and see if it takes off.. if it don't then time for a new one.

OK, I know my kids will be born dumb because of this...
But I don't have an installation manual for this. And from what I remember from installing them in old apartments years ago, there is a very specific order that each screw must be put in - and removed.
Or is there a generic way to get to the fan? Can I just unscrew what I intuitively think is right? Or is that a path to the Dark Side?

Might also check the capicator for the fan there and see if its good. On some units its in back of the control set up right in front

It doesn't just slide out... And there are lots of screw that seem to be either
Attached to something important
Inaccessible - that is, screwed in BEFORE the unit was in place
And I know I don't know nuthin' about capacitors.
