Doors and Windows - Door will not remain shut

I have a Armoir door that will not remain shut.

When you close the door and release it, it slow falls back to the open postion. While I can install a latch, I would prefer to make the necessary adjustments and have it remain shut.

By the way, I have a bedroom door that act is a simliar fashion.

It sounds like something in your house is out of level, or out of plumb. Gravity is making it fall open because it is leaning that way slightly to begin with.

You might be able to take the hinge pins out of the door hinges, then slightly squeeze the hole tighter (use a visegrips and a cloth to keep from scratching). You will have to tap the hinge pins back in with a hammer, but it might make the hinges tight enough that the door won't fall open.

As for the armoir, I'm not sure what kind of hinges it has, but I would guess that it does NOT have hinge pins like your door. You might need to put some sort of door "catch" on the door and also inside the armoir so that when the door goes close, it can snap into something that will keep it closed. You can find these at almost any hardware store.

You could also try to level the armoir by putting something underneath the front legs, like some of those glass furniture leg coasters.

correct, they do not have a pin. I understand the latch concept, but would prefer to make adjustments to the door. However, I do not know where to begin--that is, is it a hinge alignment problem???

where or what should I check first?

I would not recommend doing anything to the doors or hinges or your armoir. Put a shim underneath the front legs and see if that helps.
