My electric water heater (Ruud) has a slow leak from the bottom. It's fairly old and we are going to get a new one. It is in the basement, but the floor is carpeted.
My question is, it could be a few days before I can get it replaced, what should I do until then?
Shut off the water to it?
Thanks for any help!

Many people think "Electric Water Heater" need to be replaced when they leak. You will want to open up the element covers and check the heating element for damage or leaks. This is where most of the time electrics leak at. Don't forget to turn the power off first before opening the covers.
Leaking water heaters can cause damage to walls and floors so it is a good idea to not just let it leak.

KAG, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
Only choices you have to keep it from ruining the carpet is to either get a shallow pan that will go under the leak and a condensate pump or turn off the power to the heater, drain it (has to be done before removal anyways) and wait for the replacement to be installed. Good luck.

My plumber replaced it today with a Bradford White 50 gallon.
majakdragon, I did place a small pan underneath, didn't end up having much damage
Ejbogusch, thanks for the advice, but I should have mentioned, it was 17 years old.
Thanks again for the replys.
