We just completed a bathroom floor using Home Depot's Terrazzo by Merrazzi....and it is quite beautiful. However, I joked to my wife that a pro installer would probably have charged "extra" (those infamous "extras" add-up !) for installing this type of floor tile. Reason: removing the grouting from the textured surface was quite a lot of work....especially considering my design goal for the install was shallow-as-possible grout lines.
Am I right on this ? Would the pros have charged more ?

Can't take sides with you or your wife, I might, then again, I might not. :D

If it were real Terrazzo, I would charge you a LOT more! :)

Yeah, I know it's not "real", but tell me this: isn't it a great value for the price ? It sure looks good !
For this type of tile, do you pros keep the grout line deep to avoid the problem I had ? When the grout was setting-up, I could not get close enough to the grout line with the sponge to remove it without messing-up the grout !

I personally wouldn't charge more... I don't usually anyway. After so many years of doing it, you get to know the tricks and know just when to wash to make sure you don't have to scrub too much on the surface(which would also wash out the joints) I may head over to HD to see what this stuff looks like. :)

Bingo....you guys know the tricks. I ended-up using a small 120 grit rotary sanding pad on my Dremel-like tool to remove the small traces of grout on the tile near the grout lines....it did the job, but of course, it took extra time. However, even some deep grooves in the "terrazzo" required a nail head to remove the grout....the surface was very irregular in places.
Let me know what you think, the stuff is called "Piazza by Merrazzi"....quite attractive, but I'd like to know how it differs from REAL terrazzo ! (Probably longevity, hardness, etc.)

I was completely off-base on this tile as far as resemblance to existing floor tile. My bad. It does NOT resemble TERRAZZO at all...it is more closely replicating TRAVERTINE tile which is more of a slate-looking marble tile with lots of surface texture.
Terrazzo is made thru an expensive process of mixing marble chips in an epoxy base and then going thru another expensive step of surface sanding and polishing ! (No wonder it's outrageously expensive)

I did more research:
1) Piazza by Merazzi is made in the USA.
2) Sold EXCLUSIVELY thru Home Depot (wow, I am surprised at that !).
3) is in the category of "glazed porcelain floor tile".
4) saw only one online comment from a floor pro who said it was tough to install and that he did not prefer it.
