We are selling our house and there is a crack in the foundation I want to have repaired. Of course it is right in back of the water heater and the guy doing the repair wants it out of the way. I figured why move it out of the way and then back, because it is a 3 day job, just move it a couple of feet and leave it. It will be closer to the electric and the water source so no additional wiring or pipe should be needed. I called my local plumber that usually does these kinds of things for us, and it seems expensive, $100 plus because he says it will have sediment that will have to be removed before moving. It is copper pipe, is this a very difficult DIY job. I am thinking:

1. turn off water supply.
2. cut out a couple of feet of pipe, I think a regular pipe cutter?
3. move heater.
4. This is the part I am not sure of, a coupling? to join the to pieces of pipe. Can you rent a pipe cutter and tourch or is it better to just buy them or is it going to cost more for the tools for me to do than to have the plumber do it?
5. solder.
6. take the rest of the day off.

Your comments on the estimate from the plumber and any advice on accomplishing the job would be appreciated.

Thanks

$100 sounds reasonable. And it saves your back. Sweating copper is easy IF you have done it before. Also you have an issue if water is still in the line, how do you handle that. No big deal IF you know what to do, but irritating if you do not know what to do.
