My husband and I just bought our first house and we are anxious to remodel the bathroom. Currently there is an old cast iron tub in there that we realize isn't going anywhere. However I'm dying to replace the wall tile around the tub. I was ready to start tearing apart the bathroom when I was warned (by our local home improvement warehouse) that this is a much bigger project than I originally thought. My original plan was to do all the removal our self and then hire a contractor to handle the retile. The home improvement warehouse is saying (without actually looking at my bathroom) it would be approximately 5000.00 just for the labor! This seems outrageous for just retiling a 5' wide by 7' tall space. So here are my questions;
1. What am I likely to find behind the original tile? I'm not aware of any leaks and although the tile is the original stuff from 1942 it seems to be in good condition. Is it very likely that we will have to replace the walls?
2. What types of things should we be considering before starting this project?
3. What should be done to prep for the new tile?
4. Is this a project worth diving into if were on a budget? It originally seemed like a great way to update the look of my bathroom but now I’m completely discouraged.
Any thoughts, tips, or insights would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Elainea

1. Depends on type of walls, old mud walls, drywall etc, you want to get it all out down to the studs.
2. Where to shower till you get this done or have a plastic sheet to cover the walls, also, now is a good time to remove and replace that old shower body and plumbing.
3. Again, need to know the condition of the walls behind the old tile, but you will be installing a vapor barrier, then 1/2" backerboard down to and over the lip of the tub.:)
4. How large is your budget?, the plumbing will be the most expensive, if you can't handle that task yourselves, either way, it will cost no where near what that person who knows nothing told you at the home center.:):)
