The smell you describe is most likely mildew. If you have padding in your house. More often than not the mildew is more concentrated in the padding since it would take the longest to dry, due to no air getting to it. If this is the case. You will have to pull up the carpets and replace the padding. Depending on how long the carpet has been wet. It may have delaminated the backing causing seperation of the fibers from the backing. So, the carpet may have to be replaced. Any attempts to clean just the carpet without messing with the padding will not solve the problem. You have to get at the source. And thats the subfloor area. Speaking of which. Depending on the surface under your padding, while you have it up you may want to take the time to seal the subfloor. Once it is cleaned up and dry of course. This will help seal in any remaining odors and help prevent damage from future leaks.
