I have a relatively new GSW water heater. I begrudingly had it serviced for some problems with its pilot light failing to stay lit. The idiot who did the work pt a new thermalcouple on and it worked for about 2 weeks until I had no hot water again. As it turns out this supposedly certified installer that did the service work cross threaded the new thermalcouple into the brass regulator mount consequently screwing the brass threads up. My question is is their any kind of tap I can use to try and chase the threads on the thermalcouple mount without having to buy a new regulator for over $200 CDN?

I am not sure rethreading will work being such a shallow fitting. Also I have never tried rethreading this fitting but being aluminum it shouldn't be to hard.

Yes you can chase the threads. I have done so many times. There is a tap made for that. I won't be able to get the size until tuesday. I had a kit that had the taps for thermocouples and pilot tubing. John Leavy co sells them , however for some reason I am unable to locate their site. Have you tried a fresh tcouple to chase the threads? probably have

I just could not go witout hotwater any longer and spent the 200 to get it fixed. But I would like to know if the tap designation might be an NGO tap. If not what might it be?
