I am getting ready to gut a kitchen which has had many renovations in its 109 year history. There is a brick chimney that extends through the second story and attic crawlspace to meet the chimney of the adjoining row house. Neither of these chmineys are in use.
I do not want to remove or disturb the chimney as it passes through the roof assembly. I intend to support the last 12"-16" below the roof line with a system built into the ceiling joists.
I realize this is a somewhat advanced but once the top section of the chimney is secure, it will be a matter of removing bricks to the first floor (about 20'). Other than designing a closure assembly for the second story floor and ceiling, is there anything else I should know about removing the bricks from this chimney so that only the party wall remains (undisturbed) .
Thanks for any help you can give.
