Hi: I have a bay window that has a metal roof that appears to be ready to accept roofing shingles if desired. There are two metal ribs that
run from the window top edge then toward to and touch the house.Each rib is at the end of the main window width or at the border of the main window and each angled window. I want to shingle this area but am concerned with puncturing the metal roof causing a leak. How is this area shingled?";

You are describing a "standing seam" metal roof, and it is not meant to be shingled over. To lay shingles on such a roof, it would be best to tear off the metal roof, repaper it, shingle the roof, using care to place metal step shingles where each course of shingles meet the house, then apply a counterflashing over the top of everything which is flashed behind the building paper and siding.
