The pilot on my tank went out but I was able to relite it & it stays lite. Problem is the burner won't lite & after a short time I smell gas. I have everything turned off right now. Will I need a new tank?

It could be that the burner needs cleaning. The pilot flame may not be reaching the burner at the right location. I doubt you need a new water heater, but a burner service call may be in order. It can be a little tricky getting the burner out and apart on a water heater. It is a little like a puzzle. There is usually one one way to do it and you have to figure it out as you go.
