I am replacing an old 45' Circumf rock tree well wall around a large maple and there are some places where the tree root is an inch or so above the surface. This is a decorative tree well type so stability is not an issue, Looks,Tree health and re-doing my labor are my major concerns. I was going to dig a trench for a rock base but don't know what to do about the areas with exposed root? Should I start the wall on the root or cut the rock where the root would be or cut the root?
