I am in the early stages of planning to build a deck onto my house, which has Vinyl Siding. In most areas and Publications I have researched,it is reccomended not to install the ledger over the siding, but to remove the siding, and install flashing behind the ledger.
I see in this websites deck Building instructions, that the ledger is installed over the sidingand washers are used as spacers. Is this for all siding and situations ,or just for specific cases.
Obviously i would preffer not having to remove and trim new vinyl siding.

Thanks
Martin

Don't fear the vinyl siding. It is extremely easy to work with.

You should remove the bottom course of siding and install the ledger board directly against the solid wood of the band joist.

If you are using 2x10 framing, you will need to cut away almost half of the second course of siding to provide room for the ledger board. Use a skill saw (a small trim saw works really good) set to a depth that will not cut into the wood beneath. make the cut and remove the bottom part of the course (it will unclip). That way, you can pull the nails from the first course and take it off easily. It is not hard, do not be intimidated.

Remember to flash behind the ledger board properly. Don't use aluminum flashing, it will corrode quickly with the new ACQ treated lumber.

Another option would be to make the deck free-standing, with the deck board closest to the house about 1/4" to 1/2" away from the siding. You wouldn't have to mess with the siding or a flashing at all, and there's no way that water could get behind it and damage the wall.
