my water heater is 3 yrs old, the pilot light keeps going out on me, i replaced the thermalcouple, cleaned out the vent but whenever i get the pilot on and release the gas valve it just goes out. not sure what else could be wrong or i just need to call a tech to look at it. any help would be appreciated. thx

Sounds like the gas valve is clogged or bad. Is there a drip leg in the gas line (black pipe) before the shut off valve and flex line?

i've rechecked the lines nothing appears to be clogged, whirlpool is telling me that its either the control box or the thermaltake so i guess i'll try the controlbox.
