I want to maximize the space in my basement for an office I'm building, so I tore down a wall which enclosed my water heater and furnace. The wall initially gave about three feet of clearance between it and my gas furnace. The furnace is in the corner of my basement, btw. Two sides are within a foot of the cement walls. The pilot light also faces the wall I tore down. How close can I rebuild my new wall from the gas furnace so that it's safe and sufficient to the residential building code. I plan to create a clearance of about a foot from the furnace with the intention to build a trap door so that there is access to the furnace through the wall in case it needs service in the future.

Thanks in advance.

Id check there with code first Most of the time its 1"back and sides and 30" front. Id hate to see your service bill from a hvac tech that had to work through a trap door to get to the furnace or pull the blower. Also how about combustion air for the furnace and water heater?
