I'm in an older home that is new to me. Although the home is stucco the outside walls of my covered patio are wood and look like they have been stained using a solid, pigmented stain. Can I prime and paint over this? What products would be good? I want to go from dark brown to off white.

Also, a few of the wood boards are sticky to the touch and look different from the rest (shiny). What about these few boards?

Any info would be appreciated!!

The boards that are sticky and shiny are probably new. The previous owner probably replaced the and used a semi-gloss paint or solid stain to make them match. Why they are sticky, I don't know, unless he used green lumber and apinted it before it had a chance to lose its moisture.

Pressure wash the whole thing lightly (you want to remove the loose paint, NOT destroy the wood!!) then prime and paint it. I would use an alklyd primer since you are trying to go from dark brown to off-white.

What kind of wood are they? are all the boards that are sticky in one area?

You have to find out why the coating is still sticky. Replace them if you have to. I'd go with a mid-grey primer and stick with the stain.

The boards look like they may be pine. There are quite a few knots in them. The boards are put up on the walls at a diagional. Only about 3 or 4 of the 6inch boards are sticky. I used a rag with some kind of paint or varnish remover and rubbed it a bit. The finish did come off and the area looks like lighter wood. I would describe the look as more gummy looking and definateky tacky to the touch. Where I rubbed the finish off, the wood doesn't feel tacky. What products do you recommend? I'm going grom dark brown solid wood stain to off white.
