I have an electric heater/AC in my apartment.
It is made by Heil. Is there any way to find out age of the unit and how much SEER by serial # or model #? I could not find SEER on the unit listed any where. Where should I look at?

How old is old. Old units didnt have a seer # on them way back. Model ## look for the size on the AC you will see a ## in it 0000240000 2 ton 000000036000 3 ton
look for the btu of the unit
On the serial### look at it like 00071000 from 1971
000083000 say 1983.look for ## for the year. they can be near the end of the ## but this is about the best I can tell you how to find the age
Post the ### back here and we might be able to help you

This unit is a 2 Ton, made the 17th week of 1991. SEER rating cannot be determined by the numbers on the indoor unit. If you provide the model # of the outdoor unit, maybe we can help you on that portion of your question.

Thanks Grandy for your message. I have few questions.
1. Couple of days ago I had AC guy to do mainainence on AC. He said, he checked, motor, belts, added oil in the oil plug Plus added Freon because it was low. He charged me 75 $. Is this ok price to pay for this kind of work?
2. Regarding the age of AC, the AC guy wrote year 75 and Heil manufracturer in his receipt for AC maintenence. I could not find any serial # on the outside unit. By having this information can one tell how many SEER this unit has
or how enery efficient this unit is compare to new ones?
2. I have some confusion regarding AC and heating unit. I have one big machine in my closet from which a big hose is going into ceiling and there is insulation arround it and there is one unit sitting outside. Which one is AC and which one is heater or both are 2 in 1?

1. If you have any belts in your HVAC system it would astound me. I can't judge if $75 is a fair price or not. Prices vary widely.
2. I need a model # from the outdoor unit.
3. The indoor unit is the air handler which contains the electric heating elements & blower for both heat & cooling. The outdoor unit is the air conditioning condensing unit. It may also be a heat pump (model # will tell).

I have checked carefully and I did not see any number on it. It seems to be there is a cover on the unit to protect it. I will how to take off the cover. I have tried today but it will not move one inch. May be there is switch or thing which I need to move first in order to take off the cover.

With the indoor unit being a 91', unless the outdoor section is newer I wouldn't expect much more than 10-12 SEER rating on it.

You cant say just outright how much you will save. Its more like how do you live and use the AC ? How is the weather this year? How long will the AC need to be on??????
So one of the papers I have here shows it this way.
If you have a SEER of 10 and it cost you $800.00 for the year to cool. If you had had a SEER 14 there it would have cost you $571.00
A seer of 12 your cost would have been $667
Hope this helps

That is exactly I was looking.
In 2004 my yearly bill was 900 $ so let say If i switch to new unit (seer 14) then it will take 15 -20 year with the current use and savings to recover the cost of new unit. I think I better off stick with the old unit as long as it run.

Like Ed said... What part of the country do you live in?? If you live in say Texas, a high SEER unit will pay for itself pretty quick over and old low SEER unit. But if you live in Michigan then a high SEER unit really wouldn't benefit you because the payback would take to long to see a difference.

SEER is for AC or heating or both?
I live in TN which is some what hot for me. My whole year bill in 2004 was 900$ and monthy average of 75$ then I don't think I can recover cost of new unit quickly.
I switich off AC during the day time ( 8 am to 6 pm) because I am not at home.
My AC unit will run for only 8 minutes then shut down for 18 minutes. Is it bad or should it run longer? Should I decrease the thermostat temprature?

SEER is for AC only and AFUE is for a furnace
