Air Conditioning - A/C not cooling

Ok just today I heard a funny hissing noise come from my A/C unit inside around the coils. Looked outside and noticed the fan wasn't running on the ouside part of the unit (Bryant). First thing I did was turn the unit off and started to check the breakers on the unit itself and they were fine, Although the unit outside was a little hot to the touch. So I took the panel off the unit outside and started to check it out and hit the override button (I thinkg thats what it is anyhow) which lets you test the unit out. I heard the fan winding trying to turn. Took the top off and took a better look at the fan. spun it and hit the test button again it it started working what i would think was properly but when it stoped it wouldn't come back on until i gave it a start. With the fan running for a few mins worried it might have messed up something I watched the unit for appox 5 mins but the coils inside were not cooling at all then the fan cut off again outside and felt the area where the fan is mounted and the motor was hot. I'm just curious if replacing the fan would be worth it or should I just contact someone and replace the unit itself any info would be appreciated

You could spend a few bucks and replace the fan capacitor. That should get the fan going. The compressor probably was out on internalk overload and may start now that it's cooled down good. But don't operate it until you get the fan going.

With Matt. If the fan ran when you pushed it get a capacitor for it and try it for sure. By then the compressor will have cooled down and should start.

Matt is right, easy fix and won't cost you much

Problem fixed. Thanks for the info come to find out it was the capacitor. It was a duel capacitor so when it went the compressor wouldn't kick on. Went ahead and replaced the fan since the post had some play in it.
