Hi all,

I have a wooden kitchen set - table and 5 chairs. The chairs all swivel.

The construction of the chairs is something like this (I'll do my best to describe):

A "stool" like base.
On that base is mounted the swivel mechanism. The mechanism is bolted to the stool-base with 4 bolts (one on each corner of the bottom plate of the mechanism), and the bolts are through the base so it's very secure.
The top plate of the mechanism is mounted to the chair. In each of the 4 corners of the plate are 2 wood screws. This is where the problem comes in. On 4 of the corners, the screws literally fell out. The holes are too wide now to screw them back in.

Unfortunately I can't enlargen the holes for bigger screws, as the holes are *very* close together.

I was thinking of something like this: Get a 3/8" hardwood dowel (give or take), and drill out the holes to some depth, maybe 1/2". Then put some glue in the hole, and tap a 1/2" length of dowel in. At least then I have some solid wood to work with; I can put screws that are a little longer than the stock screws that came with the chair.

Any thoughts? I have never really done much wood repair before, at least nothing that needs to support real human weight (I'm 260lbs).

The rest of the set is in very good condition, perhaps maybe this chair was just faulty. Not under warranty, and I'd like to repair it myself (I am pretty handy).

Thank you!

The drilling and installing the dowel will work. Alternatively, you could take some toothpicks and put some wood glue on them and shove them into the hole. Once the glue is dry, about 30 minutes, trim them off and drill into them for the screws.

Hope this helps.

There is also wood filler that you can screw into
But the dowel plan is probably best for strength in this case
