I am ripping out an old shower stall in the basement and after removing the basement pan which was embedded in a cement base, i have found that the shower drain appears to be a copper or lead pipe that goes straight down and is embedded in the concrete floor; how does one connect a drain from the new shower drain and make it watertight?

Expect to remove concrete around this piping until you reach a larger diameter piping. From there, transition materials to PVC by means of a rubber fernco coupling, you can reduce size of piping to minimum requirements as needed for the shower drain.

Make sure you put down a bed of mortar for your new unit.
