I have a one windowed room that I use for my entertainment room.
The window is facing directly west and positioned behind my TV. What I would like to do is put a set of functional shutters on the exterior so as to block out the light.

The shutters I have in mind are the wood slated with a cross peice at the top and bottom, Now I'm not talking about the louvered kind.

Problem is I haven't the sligest clue on what kind of wood to use or what method needed.

Any help here would be most appreciated.

to clarify: you're wanting to put exterior shutters on the exterior of your windows, but hinge them so you can open & close them......from the outside of your house??

are you wanting to build the shutters yourself?

Yes to all questions Annette.

I had a nice post typed up but all was lost in the bliss due to forum malfunction.

Thanks

that seems incredibly inconvenient - to have to go OUTSIDE to close your shutters, so you can watch TV without the sun hitting you in the eyes. wouldn't a regular INSIDE window treatment work better? like blinds or a shade or draperies??

Well thing is the TV is a very large TV and it blocks the Window as it is, I have blinds but they are not enough to keep the light out, I tried adding a full solar screen but the sun light continues to come in. As far as drapries go I'm not sure what color would best fit the room as I have earth tone foe paint on the walls. I was hoping the shutters would also help keep a bit of security as the rest of the house has burgular bars except this one as it was a conversion.

As far as going outside to open and close the shutters that won't be necessary as they will remain closed.

I'm pondering on using 1X2's stacked together and then adding cross bracing to the top and bottom.

you could use blackout draperies over blackout roller shades. (almost any color would work with beige walls.) that should do the trick as well as, if not better than, exterior shutters, and you won't have to board up your house like Fort Knox.

why does this room need to be TOTALLY dark anyway? isn't just a tiny bit of light okay? or is this like a movie theater room?

is there any other way to arrange the furniture? putting a TV in front of a window is really not the most attractive way to arrange a room.

Anette, the room is a conversion from garage to Theater room, The room size and arrangement will not allow the TV to be positioned anywhere else in the room. TV size is 61" wide screen, room dimensions are 12 X 20. The house has another room for living.

I'll look at other avenues though on darkening.

Thanks
