What kind and size of roller do you use? I was wondering about the roller soaking up so much of the compound that it wouldn't go on good.

I assume you are rolling mud for a stomp texture. Use a minimum of 3/4", I prefer 1-1 1/2". I also like the lambs wool better, I believe it releases the material better [but then I'm from the old school and never could get adjusted to synthetic covers] The biggest problem people have with rolling drywall mud is not thinning it enough. Of course the thinner it is the lighter the texture. The mud needs to be creamy enough so the roller will pick it up and roll smoothly on the ceiling. hope this helps :)

Yes, that helps! If I want it smooth then just sand it , right?

If you are wanting a smooth surface I would apply it with a broad knife. I suppose you could apply it with a roller and then smooth it out with a wide knife but to sand it all back to smooth would be a lot of work.
