I am getting ready to hang sheetrock in the basement. The ceilings will be 5/8 sheetrock. A couple of the walls that run perpindicular to the floor joices are about 2 1/2 inches from the joices where I will be attaching the rock. Can I skrew to the joice and let the 2 1/2 overhang or do I need to put a backer on top of the plate?

I think you would be OK as long as you don't plan to install any crown moulding. That being said if it isn't too much of a hassle I would add a nailer to the floor joist or on top of the plate as I would rather be safe than sorry. :)

Id also fill it in up there on top of the plate.

I'll try to get a backer up there. No crown but don't want any future problems. It's tight next to the exterior wall. Should have thought ahead and put on before the wall went up. But that would be too easy.
