I have Richdel valves on my existing home sprinkler system which is fed by my own irrigation well. It seems that every year I have to dig up the valve box and clean the valves. Two years ago I replaced one of them because the zone that it fed continued to leak at one of the sprinker heads. That seemed to fix the problem, but before I shut it down for the winter it started to leak again.

I went to my local supplier thinking that the valves were old and outdated and needed to be replaced. He told me that the Richdel valves are good and any valve I would install would require regular cleaning if there was sediment coming from the well. The irrigation well is only used during the summer and has a fair amount of sediment in it when I first run it in the spring.

Questions:

How are the Richdel valves in terms of reliability, etc?
Should I install some type of sediment filter ahead of the valves?
Are there sediment filters designed for sprinkler systems or are they the same as a typical house filter?

If its that bad on the valves Id put a filter on the line from the pump to the valves. Just use the paper filter kind in it is all. Do you have a valve that you can put a hose on in the line right by the pump. You could put a hose on it come summer and let it run for a time to like clean out the well before you turn on the sprinklers.
