Help-- I recently purchased a house that has a very old HVAC unit--it is from 1987-it is a Trane XE800--Now that it is getting warmer out, I recently turned on the AC and alhtought the fan is working outside nothing is happening inside--so #1-is it possible that an AC unit this old could still work-#2-If not do I have to replace the Ac and the Furnace (Trane furnace as well & also very old) #3 If I have to replace both items how much usually does it cost? Desperately needing advise--thanks

It could work Dont run the outside with out the inside fan.Didnt they run it and check this out before you got the house
Yes you could just put a new AC in on the old furnace.
But 18 years ?????? An AC is good for about 15 thats it. Yes some do run longer.
I know it dont sound good . But do go for a new furnace and AC unit. With the better AFUE on the furnace and the SEER on the AC unit it will pay you back. Some of the company now give a 10 year warranty if you put in the furnace and AC at the same time.
As for costs its hard to say from one state to the other its different all over.
Be sure and get 3 bids on the job. ASk around there who the other people have do their work.
