I'm an HVAC Green horn and I was wondering how big of a breaker a central air compressor for a 1000 sq ft Cape Cod style house would require. I have space in my pannel but I also have an electric dryer, range, and hot water heater. I am afraid this will be too much for the 100 amp service. I just finished a kitchen remodel project in which I removed a large through wall AC unit and summer is right around the corner and I have no AC and a pregnant wife. Any insight would be helpful. Noone wants a moody, miserable, sweaty, pregnant wife now do they.
Thanks,
Jason.

You'll more than likely need a 40 amp circuit free for it.

Just looked at a catalog to see what a 3 Ton (likely more than you need) 12 SEER unit draws. The outdoor unit needs a minimum of 20 Amps & the air handler (if the evaporator coil is not mounted on a furnace) would require a 15 Amp circuit. Both circuits would need to be 230 Volts.

Well I just looked at the elect. ratings for Goodman 10 and 12 SEER 2ton equipment 10 SEER min. 17.6 max. 30. 12 SEER min. 13.2 max. 20.
Air handler if used 15.

Dryer 35 amp.
Range 40 amp.
Water heater 35-40 amp.
plus your 120 circuits.
Add those up and you have a full box.

This may not end up being an issue because a friend of mine knows an out of work electrician who will help with a 200 amp upgrade for around $300 less parts. Does that sound like a good deal?

Where did I get 40 amps from ?? Sorry :(
On the electrical upgrade make sure you pull a permit if required and get it inspected.

For sure this day and age put in a 200 amp panel You will need it. Trane 2 1/2 ton calls for a 18 minimum circuit ampacity with a 30 fuse or breaker size. On a seer 13 to the 19 one.
