I'm going to be building a 2nd floor deck with kind of a tricky situation. The 1st floor of the house is below grade (see pic), and there is a yard at the 2nd floor level. The yard is comprised of some sandstone and other hard rock surfaces.
There's nowhere I can place any posts, so I wanted to cantiliever the deck out and use crutches. The problem is that I can't find any data in any book on the specs I should use for these crutches. Are they legal? What size lumber? What angle? What location to tie to the deck and house? Can anyone point me in the right place?

Start at your local bldg. dept. and see what they require and will approve. THAT'S how you build it.
There are far too many variables involved for anybody in this forum to give you the "right" answer.
