My six? year-old three speed fan has only had one for a few years. We will be having an electrician out in a couple of weeks to check out several outlets and do an overall check and I'm thinking of buying a new fan to have installed. Is this a good idea or is this like replacing the tv remote because the batteries are weak? I mean, could this be a simple thing that the electrician will be able to fix or is the fan dead as far as three speeds are concerned? If dead, should I have the fan put together when he arrives to work, or should I leave the blades off?

If it's a high-quality fan and you like it, contact the fan manufacturer to find out how to buy a new capacitor block for it. If the fan is nothing special, it's probably better to replace it. The blades are not put on until the fan is hung and wired, so don't put them on ahead of time. You can begin the installation until you get to a step that you can't do, and then you should stop there.

It's a nice one, but fairly cheap, so no big loss replacing it. The capicitor block would probably cost more between buying it and having it replaced?
