I have a small home type compressor that has a nailer. Looks like it comes with 2.5 " brads. I have a job to do with it that I would prefer to use smaller brads/nails. Can you do that? Can I go to a local warehouse or hardware store and get 1.5" or something? Or does it depend on brand?

If you can find a make and model of the nailer that is usually stamped on it the type of nails it uses will be easy to find.
18 guage brads are the most common and are available up to 2" in length.
You also could have a finish nailer that comes with nails up to 2 1/2" long.
Most can shoot shorter than the maximum length nails.
Get back to us on the model number.

Take the nailer to the home center. Ask the person in the tool area to help you find shorter nails for it.
You will probably purchase a box of 1000.
Is there some reason why the long nails won't suit your purpose - such as coming out the other side where it is visible?
Typically molding and other trim on a wall will take a 2.5" nail or brad without visibility on the other side.

I have not had the chance to take it in yet, but the brand name is "Campbell Hausfeld"....the reason I can't do 2.5" ers is that it is for an RV...so there are places where 2.5 might go thru the cab and hit something I would rather not puncture. Thanks for the help.....mw

Do the nails actually measure 2 1/2 " and are there any numbers on the gun?

The ones that came with it actually measure 2.5. I went to two home centers yesterday and found many brands....but not this one. I will try their website and see what is interchangable. These are 16 gauge 2.5's. I'm hoping to be able to find/use 1.25's. So what do you think?

16 guage sounds right.
I have never seen proprietary 18 or 16 guage brads so I think you will be quite safe with what you have already seen.
I also have not seen a brad nailer that couldn't shoot brads smaller than the largest size.
