We are in the process of renovating a bathroom. The tub/shower has a single knob, with the diverter just beneath. Does the replacement fixture have to have the diverter in the same place, or can we change to a fixture that has the diverter on the spout?

You can put in whatever you want as long as you are looking at a new valve.

The kicker to this question is, how much repair work to the tub wall do you have to do? Is it tile or some type of surround?

Thanks for the info. We took everything down to the studs, but already put up new backerboard. Been holding off on starting any tiling, though. We got a new fixture and see how to change things.
