I am planning on hiring someone to paint the exterior of my house. At the moment I am looking at 2 different contractors and one uses a sprayer and the other rolls the paint.

My question is which is better spraying or rolling?

It depends on the application. Both have positive and negative aspects. You can get a good job [or bad] with either one.

I vote for brush/roll. Guranteed a thicker mil finish.

It depends on your exterior
Usually I prefer brush or roll
Unless it's one of those really textured exteriors
Those I'll spray

Here in New England it's alot of wood siding so mostly I brush

It is dependant on the siding you have and the prep work done. For rough siding (rough stucco, cinderblock, T111 wood, etc.) then I spray and back roll to force the paint into the "holes". But on smooth siding, I just spray. The total job is much more than applying the finish coat however. There is cleaning (power washing, mildew removing, scraping ivy, etc.) then patching, priming, caulking. The prep on simple jobs takes me about 3/5's of the time I spend painting a house. On one that requires major restoration It's mostly prep. Which one will spend the time?

I perform both methods
and always prefer spraying siding
it looks slicker,IMO it puts the paint on thicker
and its quicker

youll get 10 different answers for 10 different painters
if the customer is insistant on brush and roll
I charge accordingly

FYI my own house is sprayed, looks excellent with 4 year old paintjob
