Hi. i have a GE downdraft vent (part of a downdraft cooktop, model JGP645) that raises and lowers out of the countertop, next to the gas range. It is about 5 years old. Suddenly it would only raise up about half way, and was slipping. It then lowered and would not shut off; I had to unplug it under the counter. Any idea how hard this would be to self-repair, or what it could be? thanks!

Not familiar with the GE downdraft but other brands have 2 microswitches, one for the fully raised position and one for the down position. If the switches aren't being pressed then it'll go up and down continually. Sometimes there's an alignment problem of a loose arm on the motor. There's probably an access panel underneath you'll have to take off to find the switches and observe motor operation.
