Tools, Sharpening and Power Machinery - Craftsman radial arm saw

:coffee: Just inherited my late father in law's Craftsman, 10 inch radial arm saw (model number 113.198111). Dear ol dad had done something with the owners manual. As I have never had one (used 'em in woodshop 30 years ago), I do not know how to align the old girl. Cuts are between 1/16th of an inch and 1/8 of an inch off square when cutting the full length. I could probably figure it out if I was ambitious, but . . . I'm looking for immediate gratification.
Is there a quick guide somewhere out there in webland? And, does anybody know about this saw . . . dependable, dangerous? It seems okay to me.

It could also be that your table and fence are what is out of square. I know that on the one I use in our warehouse, the table and fence can be loosened and adjusted slightly.

I've put a lot of miles on my old Sears radial arm saw. Never had a problem except to replace the switch after about 15 years. Have since moved to California and "downsized" so gave many shop tools to my daughter!!
Anyway.. There should be a couple of large allen head screws on the top of the arm where the arm conects with the collum. Loosten them and use a framing square to align the arm than retighten the screws.
To check easily, cut a 1X6 in half ( at 90 degrees) then flip one side over and see if the cut still matches. If it does it is perfect.

there was a recall on some of the sears RAS , you might want to check and see if yours is included

Fortunately my saw is covered by the recall so I ordered my guard upgrade kit which includes a new table.

Sorry, it will be a cold day before I give up my Craftsman RAS for $100. Folks, ya just gotta be careful! You can't legislate stupidity. You see a spinning blade, keep your hands away from it. Simple lesson.

Hmmm my Dad had a Craftsman which was at least 20 y/o when I joined the Navy....so lets see, now it would be 53. Last time I talked to the guy who bought it with the house, it was still running and he had all his fingers, as did my Dad and I.

As with everything else, not made like they used to be.

just remember sawwoman safety first, which includes making sure all hair is under a hat or otherwise contained, no loose fitting jewelry and keep all body parts out of the line of fire. RAS can be your best friend or your worst enemy it just depends on how carefull you are.
