I have central air in my house which I keep at 78 degrees. I like to keep my bed room much cooler at night. Would a 6000 btu window A/C for my 15 x20 bedroom be cheaper than running my central air all night long at 68 degrees to cool my bed room and the rest of the house? I would close the door to my bed room and keep the central air at 78 degrees.

If you just want the bedroom cooler than the rest of the house, the answer to your question would be yes. If you are thinking about shutting off the central, normally I would not advise it because then you need to play catch up. There are window units available with programable thermostats built in. For your application, I would think these would be a good choice but 6,000 btu/hr is likely major overkill.

With Grady here Put the small unit in and make the bedroom cooler. But let the big unit alone you want it to keep the humidity out of the home . This is what makes you feel cooler and it wont run as much..

Some can stand the noise, I can't stand the quiet! Sounds like a good idea to me but if noise is an issue , better check with the spouce and make sure your both in agreement. If noise is an issue, try a Mitsubishi ductless. I like it cold enough to hang meat when I sleep. My stat this winter was 62F I had the window open several times. :)
