Recently purchased a new water softener, still have rust showing up in the hot water. We were told that there is most likely a rust build up in the hot water heater and the best way to resolve this problem would be to get a new one or try and flush it out with a hose, which seldom works. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Kelley821, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
Not sure who told you that draining and flushing seldom work. If done properly and often enough, it can extend the life of your heater. I have included a link for the proper way to do this. Many people think that draining is the same as flushing and do only half the job. Follow the instructions and you should have no problems. Just click on the link and you'll be fine. Good luck.

Might look into a potassium filter set up after the water softener. That is what we use down here to get the rust out of the water.
