Our neighborhood is built on and old gravel bed. This means that we have very little topsoil and once you dig past a few inches, it's all gravel and stones maxing 9-11".

We're thinking through a few landscaping projects such as replacing a small stone path with brick/ cut stone as well as building a retaining wall for a mid sized flower/ plant bed.

My question is: since we live on a gravel bed, what type of base do we need beneath the path and retaining wall? I want to ensure that it doesn't move as the ground goes through its freezing/ thawing process (we live in the NE, lower hudson valley).

Any ideas?

Many thanks... Oliver
