I don't have an alarm system (at least yet, anyway), but I do have a bunch of ADT stickers which I am putting on all my lower windows as a visual deterrent. The problem is I have a neighbor who, although a great guy, tends to be very nosy and inquisitive. I know he will inevitably come over and ask me about my "security system", and because he talks to everyone in the neighborhood, I'd just as soon NOT tell him I don't really have one. That means that when he asks how much I pay a month for it(which he will), I need a figure to throw out. What is an average cost per month of a security system- $20, $30, more?

You can get monitoring for as little as 10-15 dollars per month. It's the equipment that can add up. The hardware for a typical system is going to cost around $200-300 on average. This can go up pretty quick with wireless devices, and other bells and whistles.

I would suggest that if your neighbor asks such a question, ask him to tell you what his salary is. He probably won't answer. If he does, just grin and leave it at that. :)

I would suggest that since you have ADT stickers, call them and get a quote on installation and service, before you put the stickers on your windows. That way Mr. Nosy will see the ADT salesperson at your house, and the monthly cost that you tell Mr. Nosy will be in line with any other neighbors who also use ADT. You wouldn't want to say you're paying 15/month when your neighbors are paying 40/month. That would just generate calls to ADT complaining about being overcharged, and ADT could question you on where you got their stickers from.
