Ok, this has been a frustrating journey at best.

The problem started with the AC would cool for a while, then it would "freeze" up and just blow stale air.

I replaced the capacitor, that did not correct the problem. Today, I replaced the relay switch, and now, the only thing that is coming out of the vents is warm air.

I ventured into the attic, and peeled the side off of the unit, while it was running, and there is plenty of cool air within the unit itself, it just doesn't seem to be making it out the vents.

Another thing to note, I had the unit powered down over night, since I removed the relay last night, to purchase the correct replacement. Is there a period where the system has to re-cool its internals, before it will start blowing cold air?

What else could this be? One other thing I noticed, the motor/fan in the attic unit is blowing air up/down, rather than sucking the air and forcing it out the vents. I don't know if this is the way it's supposed to force air-flow. Is there a certain way that the capacitor is supposed to be connected, or does it merely close the loop?

There are also 2 red wires (among the others) that I am not too confident on, however, when I reverse them, the unit does not come on at all.

Frustrating at best. :wall:

Thanks

lets start with this.

The problem started with the AC would cool for a while, then it would "freeze" up and just blow stale air.
Does the coil and lines get frost on them??? Is the big copper line cold and wet at the outside unit?? If not you can be low on freon

Is the coil inside clean???is the filter clean???

Why the capacitor???? why the relay???? post Back in this same post.

I replaced the capacitor from reading what sounded like similar problems on here.

I replaced the relay at the advice of a co-worker.

Being completely frustrated, we called the service techs, and they said it sounded like we were low on refigerant, so I will have them look for a leak while they are here.

And before, the large line would be cold as anything, and the small line room temp. Now they are both room temp.

Everything appears to be clean, the filter has been changed every 30-45 days.

If they dont find the leak but they should. Have them put in a little Dytell in the freon . This will show red where the leak is later on.

sounds like you have a leak. If you get air flow from the registars, its likely low on refrigerant....Yes, tell them to search for the leak, or they'll be comming back. Some do a gas and go if the leak holds for a year because R22 is still relatively cheap. About $7.50/# for the customer.
