I am attaching a ledger to a stucco framed house. The ledger is for a roofed porch and have to attach to the studs (no joist available). Two questions: 1) Is it okay to attach a ledger board to the wall studs if I use the proper lag screws?, and 2) do I need to remove the stucco (lath, chicken wire, etc) and attach directly to the studs?

Here I'm required to remove any exterior covering-siding/stucco when attaching a ledger, they let us mount ledger on top of exterior sheeting, but must use lags going into studs. I personally use 4"x3/8" lags or 4"x1/2" depending on situation, counter sink them into the ledger too so when your using joist hangers it never fails you'll have hangers fall right where a bolt is.
