We are separating two colors in our kitchen with chair rail molding. The top half color is a rich, cabin red (flat). The bottom half color is an oyster white. The base molding will be the same oyster white, in a semi-gloss. My question is, what sheen should the bottom white half and what sheen should the chair rail molding in the middle be?
My instincts say that both should be flat to match the sheen of the top red half. Any advice?

The wood work is normally painted with enamel [gloss or semi gloss]. The wall in between the base and chair rail can be either flat or semi gloss. Painted flat is more like a regular wall. Some like it shiny where it more resembles a wainscoating. The main reason for not using flat on wood work is so that it is more durable, it also accents the trim. Hope this helps.

since you went flat with the top red color, go flat with the bottom white color, and use semi gloss for all trim.
HOWEVER, if you haven't really actually purchased the red paint yet, i'd recommend using satin - it'll be easier to clean if necessary than the flat - plus, flat has a sort of chalky look to it, IMO, whereas satin is just slightly.....satiny!
