my deck is going to be 28" finished height and 19 x 12. I am using the beam system. My question is what kind of foundation can I use. I'm using a post hole digger. I need to dig 9 holes. It will not be attatched to the house. I am not wanting to dig 9 42" holes by hand with a post hole digger. Are there other options. Ugh!

You could rent an auger or hire a teenager to do it for you. :)

I always use gas powered augers, 1 man and 2 man the most common and even using them it's hard work and will put a hurtin on your back.

They also make a pull behind model I'd recommmend if you have the room. These units are on a levered system that is cantalevered by the drive motor-so you have very little physical effort at all digging the holes, AND they have reverse should you run into some roots-try that with the 1 or 2 man diggers:). They can get into some tight areas, but if your right up against a building the 1 man gas powered or old fashion post hole digger my be your only option.

Those units are generally referred to as hydraulic augers. Motor sits on a cart and the shaft hooks onto the augers controls with a shaft. They will outdig any one man unit. Guy i am helping do a garage addition for renting a Stihl one man auger, i wouldn't recommend one of those. We made him take it back and get the hydraulic one.
