I am installing American Craftsman Vinyl Windows. I do not have Central A/C. Since these are vinyl, and the Sill Plate has a plastic piece sticking up. I can not rest a window unit on it. What if anything can I do to install seasonal window units?

In my last place, I put some heavy foam on the bottom of the window.. That way it will protect the lips that hold the screens and what not.
Otherwise, you should be able to put it in the window with no problem.
A quick side question for you, What type of windows did you have before?? We are thinking of changing our windows out with the American Craftmen windows. Do it yourself or HD did it for you?

I don't think foam will be enough. The lip is on the inside and is 1 3/4 inches high.
I put them in myself, the old windows were metal awning type windows with the a crank and the screen on the inside. The hardest part was the fact that the old windows did not have blind stops.

If a 2x4 is too wide you can rip it to the correct width & sit the unit on that with a piece of foam.

But how do I attach the unit. I don't want to screw into the vinyl windows, that would ruin the seal. Do I bolt the unit to the sill rather than the window, and what about at top. I normally, with wood windows, screw into the sash, once again that would break the seal

I never done the screw on mine in our last place.. I set unit in, closed the window down on top of the unit. and pulls the sides out. The "L" will be in front of the window..
If you are afraid someone is going to try to open the window w/ the unit in, put 1x2 between the lower window stash, and "wege" it in.

Like Jay mentioned. Those screws are pretty much just to keep someone from opening the window and do little for support. With the weight that will be pulling on that vinyl window you will want to use a brace on the outside to help out.

Get a support bracket for the unit, if you have a company install the vinyl, they'll likely install it PROPERLY for you at a fair price (being a former customer).
