Hi, I'm currently thinking of repainting and remodeling my son's room. The room is very old and it hasn't been painted for years. The paint isn't chipping yet but the white color looks really boring. He's 15 years old and he wants a unique color combination that looks good. Maybe a nice green or a calm but nice looking blue with some white? I'm not sure of what color to pick. My problem is that when we moved in, the landlord (from what it looks like) covered a door opening that led to the next apartment. The outlines looks like it can be a door. Well anyway, the wall comes out so it's not smooth, more of like a bump. Also when the landlord painted this room, he didn't do much of a good job so there are lot of textures on the wall maybe from the paint but it's bumpy and it does not look good. Is there anyway to smooth out the wall? I want to smooth out the area where the door used to be because it is like a huge bump on the wall. When we moved in the ceiling had this texture on it. It looks like some kind of design that the landlord made, kind of like streaks. Anyway is there anyway I can remove those ceiling textures? Thanks.

The walls and ceiling can be smoothed out with drywall mud. If the door patch is sticking out from the rest of the wall the best you can do is make it less noticable. I would assume that covering the textures on the wall and ceiling would be easier than sanding or scraping them down. Make sure you check with your landlord first. His tastes might be differant than yours.

I would use some 1 5/8 metal studs and put up a new wall. If there are outlets they can be dealt with in the electrical forum. Hopefully the landlord will lit you fix the mess if not make the studs tight and it won't fall down for the same reason you can not lift a wall in your basement that is cut to the exact height. I would probably screw the top track in though and leave the bottom float[no fasteners in the floor]. This will also give your neighbors and your son some dead air space[sound proofing] that may come in handy for your son.

buy new bedding first, then choose a paint color for the walls to coordinate. don't just pick a paint color out of thin air.
