I just got my house and I tried to change the lock. But the new lock is small than the old one. So there is bare wood show up. The owner left me the paint, so can I just paint the small space? if so, how can i do that? Or I need to paint the whole door? thanks

I would take a small brush and just paint the raw area [may take 2 coats] After the paint is dry you will know if it looks OK or not. If it is a panel door, you can paint the raised areas and not the whole door if the touch up shows to bad. They also sell brass plates that go under the lock which would be another option.

Thanks. But do i need to prepare it with sanding and primium? This is my first paint job. :)

Since it is such a small area I wouldn't bother with priming. It is possible it may need sanding [if it is rough or has a ridge.] If you wind up having to repaint the door then you should sand first.
