I need to replace my old gas dryer that no longer works. After shopping I am a bit confused. The salesgirl told me I would need to purchase a 4 prong cord. Do the new gas dryers use a different kind of outlet? I have a standard outlet in my laundry room. I don't want to purchase something I won't be able to use. And I can't afford to put in new wiring now.
I hope someone can help clarify this for me...the more I spoke with the salesgirl the more confused I got.
Thanks,
cins

Hello cins. Welcome to my Gas Appliances topic and the Do-It-Yourself Web Site.
Unless some details are missing or I am missing something, gas dryers do not need a 4 prong cord. Gas dryers use a three prong cord which must be plugged into a 3 prong grounded outlet.
Did you look at the cord attached to the machine? Should be a standard 3 prong cord which must be directly installed (plugged) into a 3 prong wall outlet.

It's always adviseable to clean the entire exhaust venting system every 2 years. Or during any dryer maintenance, connection, servicing and or repairs.

Thanks so much for your response.
The salesgirl I spoke with told me in addition to the cost of the dryer I would have to purchase a 4 prong dryer cord, new gas lines, new vent and non-plastic exhaust pipe. That's where I got confused...I told her I had a 3 prong cord now and she said that wasn't being used anymore.
My neighbors have been great at helping out while my husband is overseas but I don't want to impose on them...or look totally stupid...that's why I decided to post on your board.
Thank you,
cins

Gas dryers operate on 120 volts, and use the same outlet as your toaster does. No cord change is needed. 4 prong cords are for electric dryers, which operate on 240 volts. Consult the owners manual for voltage requirements.
