Kitchen Gas Appliances - Gas oven turns on by its self.

My mother called me at work last night, her gas oven is going on by its self. The knob for the oven is in the off position yet the oven fires up stays on for several minutes, shuts off, then goes on again. I never heard of anything like this before. I called my friends from the local firehouse and had them come by to shut off the gas. The oven comes on for about 10 seconds shuts off for about a minute comes on for about 10 seconds then shuts off for about an hour, then starts again.

The knob slips on the stem of the thermostat. If there is too much free play the knob may appear to be turned full off but actually be in the lowest setting or a keep warm setting, etc. Pull the knob off the stem and check for excessive wear inside the knobs female end.

May be an internal short in the thermostat if that type is the electrically operated type. That type has two wires attached to it only. No tubes carrying gas to or from it.

Possible short in the wiring. Depends on the brand, make and model. Type of thermostat, etc. Need brand, make and model with model and serial numbers, etc.
