I am switching out an old overhead light for a new fixture. The new fixture has a basic white, black ground setup. The old light has a white black ground and red wiring coming in. The light is controlled by a switch. Where do I hook up the red line? The boxed directions do not mention a red line setup.

Where is the red currently hooked up? Where is the black hooked up? Does the old light have a receptacle as part of it?

The current fixture is just a screwin light socket. It is part of a longer line of ceiling lights but is the only one connetected to the light switch. The red line was connected to a screw on the back of the fixture seperate from the white. The black line was connected to a new black line as was the copper wire. There were 3 lines on the back of the fixture- 2 white(i assume in and out on the whites) and the red.

Connect the red to the new fixture black. It is the switched hot wire. Connect the white to white.
