I've purchased the materials to build my own solar screens for 46x84 inch windows. The screen framing comes in 84" lengths. Can a single 46x84 inch screen be made or does a cross member need to be added for support and to keep the screening tight?

I would add the center cross brace.
No, let me rephrase that -- I would have the GLASS SHOP add the center cross brace.
Maybe it's just me and I happen to live in just the right place and have just the right glass shop in town, but I have found that they will build a better screen than I can for only a couple dollars more than what I pay for the material to do it. It's not worth my time and the frustration to spend about 30 minutes building the screen to save $2, and end up with a lesser quality screen.
