I currently have a Brinks home alarm system. We purchased a cat (under 20 pounds) and so I bought Visonic pet immune motion detectors and installed them myself (they were a Duo brand, although looking at the website the model we bought last year is no longer offered). So far they work fine with the exception of the detector in my foyer, that faces the stairs going up to our second level...that alarm seems to trip when the cat goes up stairs. I suspect it trips because the motion detector I use avoid pets based upon height, are there any detectors that can work facing stairs, or are able to use weight / mass to screen out pets? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If the stairs allow the cat to be closer to the sensor, then it can be a little tricky. The "pet immune" tech is based on the animal not being able to get closer than about 6-8 feet from the sensor's field of view. If you bought the dual tech type (PIR + microwave), you can try adjusting the sensitivity settings. You can also try masking the lens (if you still have the install instructions, this will vary by manufacturer/model).
Another alternative is the ceiling mount devices that can look down at the foyer, but will not really see the stairs.
